At 9 O¡¯clock on 9th, June, the brilliant neon lights decorating Macau city were turnned out for 15 minutes------ this was not a large-scale blackout, but an activity of "Lights-Out for Quarter Hour" carried out by the SAR Government to promote energy efficiency. This is the first large-scale activity for the ¡°Energy Efficiency Week 2008¡±. At 9 O¡¯clock of that night, the lights in many places, including Symbolized Hotel Architectural Complex in ZAPE, the newest Sai Van Bridge, Nobre Governador Carvalho Bridge and Friendship Bridge which connect peninsular Macau and Taipa, were turnned out at the same time, making more than half of Macao lose its previous ¡°brilliance¡± for a short time. Energy Development Office of the Special Administrative Region said, there were more than 1,000 units, including government agencies, large-scale casino hotels, banks, shops and so on which had applied to take part in the event, and the organizers had called on the local residents to keep lights out for 15 minutes at home before the event, to support energy efficiency. It is reported that the city had a 5-minute lights out in the ¡°Energy Efficiency Week¡± of last year, which made the electricity consumption of that day is 5% lower than that of regular day, a significant effect. As a result, this event was continued in this year, and the running time would be extended to 15 minutes. The Macau ¡°Energy Efficiency Week 2008¡±, sponsored by the SAR Government, was beginned on 9th and will last for one week. During this period, in addition to the lights-out event, there are many other events that will be carried out, such as ¡°Casual Dressing Day¡±, phase report and brief introduction to ¡°Plan on Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation by Public Sectrors and Institutions¡±, ¡°Seminar on the Design and Apllication of Energy-efficient Buildings¡±, "Green Carnival" and so on.
